Don’t worry too much about whether others’ feelings toward you are genuine or not. As long as you like her and approve of her, there’s no need to obsess over whether she’s after your money, your attention, or something else. As long as your value is high enough—even high enough to make someone “put on a show” for a lifetime—what’s the harm? What you really need to care about has never been her motives, but your own choices. This coincides with some of the strategic ideas in Mao Zedong’s *On Protracted War*: You fight your way, and I’ll fight mine. Don’t let the other person dictate the pace, and certainly don’t wear yourself down with guesswork, probing, and suspicion. Your goal is not to figure out exactly how genuine the other person is, but to maintain your autonomy throughout this asymmetric game—where the opponent holds the advantage—and ultimately secure your own victory.
